How Long Does Healing Take After Laser Eye Surgery?
One of the most common questions new patients ask is: how long will it take to heal after laser eye surgery? Everyone wants clarity, fast but healing naturally takes time. In this post, we’ll walk you through each phase of healing for different procedures, what to expect, and when you’ll truly feel “normal.” And yes, there’s a chance to take our suitability self‑test at the end.
Immediate post-op (first hours)
Right after surgery, your eyes feel irritated or gritty. You’ll sit in a recovery area for 10–20 minutes. Some eyes are already better in a few hours. You’ll receive medicated drops, protective shields, and rest instructions. Because of modern techniques, discomfort is minimised.
Day 1 to day 3
These days are crucial. Most patients experience clearer vision (for LASIK or SILK) within 24 to 48 hours. PRK healing on the surface can feel uncomfortable (light sensitivity, tearing). You may be asked to rest your eyes and avoid screens for some hours. Protective glasses or sunglasses help.
Day 4 to day 7
Vision continues to sharpen. PRK-treated patients often reach better clarity by day 5. You’ll start returning to work and daily routines but still avoid strenuous activity. Minor red spots or dry eyes can persist. Use drops diligently.
Week 2 to week 4
Eyes stabilise. Most discomfort fades. Any residual haze or vision fluctuations usually disappear. You can resume full activities, including sports, unless advised otherwise. Monitoring ensures everything is healing well.
Month 1 to month 3
The final phase. The last fine adjustments in vision settle. Any small changes or enhancements (rare) are assessed. For LASIK, this phase is quicker; for PRK, stabilization may stretch to 3 months. Long-term clarity becomes established.
When you’ll truly feel “normal”
Many patients say they “feel fully normal” around 2–6 weeks post-op—no more thought of glasses or healing. But everyone is different: some faster, some slower.

Factors include dry eyes, very high prescription, age, off‑norm healing, or not following aftercare. Good hydration, protecting your eyes, and rest are essential.
