Can LASIK surgery cause glaucoma?

The short answer
No. LASIK does not cause glaucoma.
LASIK does not create glaucoma in healthy eyes. But LASIK and glaucoma are sometimes talked about together, which can cause confusion.
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an eye disease. It damages the optic nerve, which sends signals from the eye to the brain.
Glaucoma often happens when eye pressure is too high.

- Vision loss can be slow
- Damage cannot be reversed
- Early checks are very important
How LASIK works
LASIK uses a laser to reshape the cornea. The cornea helps light focus clearly.
- Works on the front of the eye
- Does not touch the optic nerve
- Does not change eye fluid flow
Why do people think LASIK and glaucoma are linked?
Eye pressure changes during surgery
During LASIK, eye pressure rises for a very short time. This lasts only seconds. For healthy eyes, this short pressure rise is not harmful.
Eye pressure readings after LASIK
After LASIK, eye pressure tests can show lower numbers than before. This does not mean pressure is truly lower. It happens because the cornea is thinner after LASIK.

Can LASIK make existing glaucoma worse?
In some cases, people with glaucoma need special care.
LASIK may not be recommended if:
- Glaucoma is advanced
- Eye pressure is not controlled
- The optic nerve is already damaged
Can people with glaucoma have LASIK?
Sometimes, yes.
It depends on:
- Type of glaucoma
- How stable it is
- Your eye health

How do doctors keep LASIK safe?
