Who are PRELEX & FemtoPRELEX for?

  • PRELEX & FemtoPRELEX are ideal for people aged 40 and over who experience age-related vision loss, also known as presbyopia.
  • If you're starting to rely on glasses for both near and far vision, and want a long-term solution, these procedures can help.
  • In the past, only multifocal glasses offered help—but today, you can achieve sharp vision with a simple, painless procedure.
  • You must be free from major eye diseases and have healthy ocular structure to be eligible.

  • PRELEX (Presbyopic Lens Exchange) and FemtoPRELEX are modern procedures that replace your eye’s natural lens with a multifocal intraocular lens.
  • PRELEX is performed entirely by a surgeon using phacoemulsification.
  • In FemtoPRELEX, parts of the surgery, like the incision and lens fragmentation, are done by a femtosecond laser (CATALYS), making it even more precise.
  • Both methods restore your ability to see clearly at multiple distances, without needing glasses.

  • The main benefit of PRELEX & FemtoPRELEX is complete independence from glasses for near and far vision.
  • The procedures are quick, safe, and pain-free, and recovery is fast.
  • FemtoPRELEX offers added precision through laser assistance.
  • A disadvantage is that this is a permanent procedure, and unlike LASIK, it cannot be reversed.
  • Reading in very low light may still require assistance for some.

  • As with all eye surgeries, PRELEX & FemtoPRELEX carry some risks.
  • These include temporary glare, dry eyes, or difficulty with night vision.
  • In rare cases, complications such as infection, inflammation, or lens misalignment may occur. Choosing an experienced surgeon and clinic helps minimise these risks.
  • Most patients, however, experience successful outcomes and significant improvement in quality of life.

If PRELEX or FemtoPRELEX isn’t suitable, Allotex may be an alternative. It’s a non-permanent, minimally invasive corneal implant used to correct near vision. It’s ideal for patients who are not yet ready for lens exchange but want relief from reading glasses.

  1. A full pre-operative eye exam determines suitability and customises your treatment.
  2. On the day of the procedure, local anaesthetic drops are applied, no needles or general anaesthesia.
  3. A 2mm laser-created incision is made in the cornea, and the natural lens is gently broken into smaller pieces using femtosecond laser (FemtoPRELEX) or phacoemulsification (PRELEX).
  4. A soft, foldable multifocal intraocular lens is implanted into the eye.
  5. Most patients can see clearly within minutes and return to everyday life the next day, without glasses.

  • Patients who undergo PRELEX or FemtoPRELEX often experience sharp, glasses-free vision at all distances.
  • Many report better vision than they had in their 30s. Recovery is quick, and most people return to normal activities the next day.
  • These procedures not only solve near vision problems but also prevent future cataracts.
