Who is suitable for SILK?

SILK is ideal for adults over 18 years old with stable vision and no existing eye diseases. It's particularly effective for those with myopia (short-sightedness) up to -8.00 diopters and/or astigmatism up to -6.00 diopters. Patients should have healthy corneas and realistic expectations about the outcome. A detailed eye examination at our clinic in Bratislava will confirm your suitability and help us determine whether SILK or an alternative procedure is best for you.

SILK (Smooth Incision Lenticule Keratomileusis) is an extremely gentle and effective method for correcting myopia and astigmatism. This minimally invasive procedure uses advanced laser technology to remove a thin lens-shaped layer from within the cornea, reshaping it to improve vision. No flap is created, and healing is typically quick and comfortable.

At our clinic in Bratislava, we perform SILK using the next-generation Elita laser from Johnson & Johnson Vision. In fact, Dr. Pavol Veselý was the first surgeon in Europe certified to use this groundbreaking laser system.

The SILK procedure offers maximum eye protection due to its minimal surface intervention. Unlike LASIK, which requires a flap on the cornea, SILK uses a laser to create a thin lenticule (disc of tissue) inside the deeper corneal layers. This lenticule is then removed through a microscopic incision, correcting myopia or astigmatism without disturbing the corneal surface.

Advantages include:

• Faster healing time and quicker return to normal activities

• Lower risk of dry eye syndrome, and suitable even for those who already have it

• Greater comfort due to the minimally invasive technique

Disadvantages may include:

• It is not suitable for everyone (eligibility must be confirmed during your consultation)

• May require slightly longer surgical time than traditional LASIK

• Only available at specialized clinics like ours in Bratislava.

As with all laser eye surgeries, SILK carries minimal but potential risk, such as temporary discomfort, sensitivity to light, or fluctuating vision during healing. Infection and over/under correction are rare but possible. Choosing an experienced surgeon and following aftercare instructions significantly reduce these risks.

If SILK isn’t suitable, other effective treatments are available. LASIK and FemtoLASIK use a corneal flap and are widely used for a range of prescriptions. LASEK and PRK are surface treatments ideal for thinner corneas. For patients over 45, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) may be preferred, as it also corrects age-related presbyopia.
