How long does laser eye surgery take?
If you’re thinking about laser eye surgery, you’re probably wondering how much time you’ll need to set aside. The good news? The whole process, from consultation to recovery, is quicker and simpler than most people expect.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through the timeline, what to expect on the day of the procedure, how long each step takes, and when you can get back to daily life.
Schritt 1: Eignungstest (Online – 1–2 Minuten)
Before anything else, it’s important to know if you’re a good candidate. At VESELY Eye Clinic, we offer a quick online self-test that takes just 1–2 minutes. This gives you a clear starting point and helps guide the conversation at your consultation.
Step 2: Consultation (Around 90 minutes)
Once you’ve taken the test and decide to move forward, your next step is a detailed pre-operative examination. This takes abou 90 minutes and includes:
- Eye scans and measurements
- A conversation about your lifestyle and visual needs
- A recommendation for the best laser method for your eyes ( iLASIK, SILK, PRK)
You’ll also have the chance to ask any questions and meet your surgical team.
Step 3: The procedure (15–30 minutes total)
The laser part of the surgery itself usually lasts less than 60 seconds per eye. But including preparation time and post-op checks, you’ll be at the clinic for around 15 to 30 minutes total.
Here’s a rough breakdown:
- Preparation: 10 minutes
- Laser treatment: 2–5 minutes per eye
- Post-op checks: 10–15 minutes
You’ll rest briefly after surgery and then go home the same day.
Step 4: Recovery time (1 day to 1 week)
Most people experience improved vision within 24 to 48 hours. Some return to work or normal activities the next day—especially after SILK or iLASIK. PRK may require a few extra days of rest, as it involves surface healing.
Here’s a general guide:
- SILK/iLASIK: 1–2 days for initial recovery
- PRK: 3–5 days for initial recovery
- Full visual stabilisation: a few weeks
How long until you see clearly?
Many of our patients say they notice a big difference the very next day. Some even describe it as “life-changing” the moment they wake up. Final results settle in over the following weeks as your eyes heal and adjust.
From start to finish, the whole process can take as little as 2 to 3 days.
Is it worth it?
For most people, the answer is a big yes. Laser eye surgery is fast, safe, and life-enhancing. You spend just a few minutes in the operating room, and you gain years of freedom from glasses and contact lenses.
