Many people choose LASIK because they want clear vision without glasses or contact lenses. LASIK is fast and safe. But a common question is: How long does LASIK last?

What does LASIK do?
LASIK is a laser eye treatment. It reshapes the cornea. The cornea is the clear front part of your eye. When it has the right shape, light enters your eye correctly. This helps you see clearly.
LASIK can fix:
- Short-sightedness (myopia)
- Long-sightedness (hyperopia)
- Astigmatism
Is LASIK permanent?
LASIK makes a permanent change to the cornea. The laser does not wear off. The shape change stays for life.
For most people, the clear vision they get from LASIK lasts many years. Many patients enjoy good vision for 10, 20, or more years.
But eyes can still change as you age. LASIK cannot stop natural aging of the eyes.
Why vision can change after LASIK
Age
As people get older, the eyes change. Around age 40, many people need reading glasses. This is called presbyopia. LASIK does not prevent this.
Small vision changes
Some people have small changes in vision years after LASIK. This is more common with strong prescriptions.
Health changes
Health issues or eye diseases can affect vision later in life.
Do people need LASIK again?
Most people do not need LASIK again. But a small number may choose a second treatment. This is called an enhancement.
Enhancements may help if:
- Vision changes slightly
- Healing was slower
How long until vision is stable?
- First day: Vision is often much better
- First week: Vision becomes clearer
- 1–3 months: Vision is stable for most people
Once vision is stable, it usually stays that way for many years.
